I am very interested in hearing more from the people living in the region today. Has it changed much since you grew up there? Also, what are the ethnic foods the region is known for?

Christopher,
I also have relatives from Amantea and most have the surnames listed in your comment. I would be interested to know if you have compiled a family tree, especially regarding the Sconza-Testa surname. I am sure we are distant relatives.

Christopher Mannerino,
You have listed the surnames of several members of my family. Do you have a family tree listed on Ancestry?

We've traced my family back quite a few generations. I am a fourth generation, full-blooded Italian-American (Calabrese, Neapolitano, Siciliano). These are the surnames we were able to track, many of which come from around the village of Amantea: Mannerino Mannarino Mavero Colella Fusco Ferrucci Berlingieri Flocari Massa Sconza-Testa Turco Veltri Bossio Rizzo Bazzarelli Roso Esposita Porco Muto Guido Garritano

Pardon me, out of curiosity, in what town were you trying to gather these records?
Denise Comment by Denise on April 3, 2008 at 5:01am
Yes, I had the most difficult time in Calabria in 2003. I was staying in Sicily and trying to get genealogical information. Now, I realize my accent is poor, but people all over Italy could at least understand me. However, the Calabrese women in the city offices were unhelpful and sent me to speak to the mayor. He essentially sent me to the "archives" where they told me to "come back in a few days." Driving across Calabria from Messina was a real trek and I didn't have time to pursue it. Their idea of record keeping was not the same as ours. Plus, I think when they knew which family I was from, the women weren't too eager to help me. Who knows?
