This group gathers together the participants of the Denuncia: Speaking Up in Modern Italy conference held at NYU on March 27-28, 2009, which explored why denuncia has become an embedded mode of comment and critique in Italian civil society.

Ciao Silvia Thanks for posting this -- very good points and I totally agree. It's shocking how little most Americans know about labor history, but perhaps not surprising given our corporate-owned media and our educational system. Evviva la classe ...

Ciao Patricia I'm glad you enjoyed the conference. I agree, it was first-rate, but I may be slightly biased since I was one of the presenters. :) I was at the sessions you mention. The documentary film about immigrants was disturbing on several c...

George,

FOUND and not sure how.

I go tutti "stew-nod" when my personal email has a message that can't be found for a day or two.

Thanks for touching base.

Hi George:

Thanks for the kind note.

I know that Zonin, Antinori, Gruppo Italiano Vini, Mezzacorona and others have invested in Sicily, yes.

Hey George--
When you get a chance, click onto my page and review some lyrics I've posted.
I could always use an impartial critique.

About Me:
Ciao a tutti! I am an Italian American of Sicilian and Neapolitan background. An author, journalist and critic, my work has appeared in magazines, newspapers, journals, and websites. My book, An Offer We Can’t Refuse: The Mafia in the Mind of America (Faber and Faber, 2006; paperback, 2007) explores some of my longstanding preoccupations as a writer: cultural mythologies and their social impact; ethnic identity and stereotypes; popular culture, especially film, and how such social categories as race, class, sexuality and gender interact in American society.

My writing on southern Italian culture, and especially about music, has appeared in various journals, magazines, and websites, the latter including Joe Sciorra's italianrap.com and Rootsworld.com.

My passions? Writing, reading, social theory, southern Italian history and culture, politics, sexuality and its social constructions, film, music, cucina italiana, and travel.

My politics are left-wing. I got my earliest political education from my grandfather Giuseppe di Pietro, from Ragusa, Sicily, a life-long persona della sinistra who was a garment industry worker and organizer. (My grandmother Anna also was a left-winger but I never knew her, as she died before I was born.) So I'm proud to have had that familial connection with Italian American working class radicalism.

I live in in the Queens West section of Long Island City, with my longtime partner Rob -- a Jewish italophile (lucky for me!)

I'm excited to be a part of this website, which represents a much-needed and overdue project to build bridges between Italy and Italian America, two worlds that have been divided for too long.
