Ciao Rodrigo!
Come stai?

Saluti e a presto.

Hi, Rod, and thanks for your response, with all its helpful information. I checked out the discussion regarding the death penalty, and I'm glad to see it's a part of i-Italy. Also, a friend gave me a new history of Italy since 1796, called "The Force of Destiny," by Christopher Duggan. I looked up Beccaria, and there's not a lot about him, but he is mentioned as a great jurist and, of course, Manzoni's grandfather. Of course, Manzoni was one of the great writers who wrote of social conditions; I read "I Promessi Sposi" years ago. As for Verga, I see that he wrote "Cavalleria rusticana," which I imagine is the basis for the Mascagni opera, the favorite of my Sicilian father-in-law. I'm looking forward to delving into my new history book, and also continuing to learn from this site. By the way, if you haven't seen the Russian version of "War and Peace," by Sergei Bondarchuk, I recommend that you do so.

Italian is a language of world culture, so of course America should have lots of people who speak it or at least read it. Of course that's true of a lot of languages in our semi-literate and globally detached nation, but, sure, the more choice, the better. And the more technology assists teaching, the easier it is to at least offer the options.

I read War and Peace, too, but Dostoevsky is my favorite! As for teaching Italian in our schools, I'm all for it, aslong as the students know English!

Hi, Rod, and thanks for your note. I've already added my comments to that site you suggested, concerning teaching Italian in high schools. On looking at your comments from others, who is the person who said no one actually reads "War and Peace"? I read it, and am a huge Tolstoy fan. Strange how people are usually intimidated by its length, and by the number of Russian characters, and by the Russians names which are unfamiliar to us, but imagine Tolstoy's wife, who had to hand write it, a formidable task--and, more than once!

I'd love to know more--I know very little & live in an area that has very few Italian-Americans. It's awful. I really miss things like decent butcher shops--I don't even eat much meat, but culturally, I love them. Our Parmesan tastes like scrubbing powder. So this may be far off the Pacific NW radar but I'm very interested.
