A few weeks ago, the Italian American community of New York City lost one of its most inspiring members.
Signora Franca Lalli founded the Italian language school, "Parliamo Italiano" on East 65th Street, more than 25 years ago.
Over time, its student body grew from a few dozen to 700 members, devoted to the study of this wonderful language of ours. Signora Lalli promoted the exploration of Italian literature and culture with her warmth, enthusiasm and a native Italian teaching staff. Under her guidance, we went places most of us might never have dared to venture alone...the poetry of Dante, the works of Italo Calvino, and critiques of famous film-makers, such as Pier Paulo Pasolini.
She successfully transformed our rudimentary understanding of our own heritage into a multi-textured appreciation
of Italy's history, political evolution, and rich socio-cultural development, through lively classroom discussions each and every semester. She was the essence of a true educator and scholar. We students of Parliamo Italiano will never forget her. Addio, Signora Lalli, e grazie tanto.
